MAKE BIG OIL PAY!

Dear Safe Shippers, Washington State Department of Ecology (Ecology) is working on a new ruling which will determine how much Class 1 facilities (oil refineries, pipelines, and marine oil-handling terminals) will have to pay in the event of an oil spill.Ecology says a large oil spill could cost the state nearly $11 Billion. Yet…their new rule proposes that Class 1 facilities will be responsible for only $300 Million. Please write to Ecology and tell them that their bad math is putting our environment/economy in jeopardy. They need to protect our ecology and make big oil pay to play. Minimizing oil spill accountability would let the oil companies’ profits rise while we risk losing what we love.

Needing inspiration? If your fighting spirit ever needs a boost, you can read this inspiring book by Rueben George of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation, our neighbors in BC: It Stops Here. “The book recounts the intergenerational struggle of the Tsleil-Waututh to overcome the harms of colonization and the powerful stance they have taken against the expansion of the Trans Mountain Pipeline—a fossil fuel megaproject that would triple the capacity of tar sands bitumen piped to tidewater on their unceded territory and result in a sevenfold increase in oil tankers moving through their waters.”
